Depending on who he is talking to, Harry can flip over from a cockney accent to a posh cultured one.(依据說話的對像,哈裏能够從說倫敦圆言輕易轉為說優俗而有教養的語行。)

A priest is walking down the street one day when he notices a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a house across the street. However, the boy is very small and the doorbell is too high for him to reach.

After watching the boy’s efforts for some time,翻譯, the priest moves closer to the boy’s position. He steps smartly across the street, walks up behind the little fellow, places his hand kindly on the child’s shoulder and gives the doorbell a sold ring.

Crouching down to the child’s level, the priest smiles and asks, "And now what,韓譯中, my little man?"

The boy replies, "Now we run!"

Ten tips

Turning to the Middle East ..。 或In U.S. election race news..。

We are our own worst enemy。

What the mind can conceive, it can achieve。

My parents come from South Africa, and we often used to go back on family visits. One Christmas about 30 years ago we left Johannesburg on a bus trip to a safari park. All the other people in the bus were Afrikaners: big healthy white families in shorts. With their handful of surnames, and heavy Dutch faces utterly distinct from their African surroundings, they were a tribe. Their forefathers had been the mostly Dutch-speaking Protestants who had come to South Africa over the centuries. We lived in the Netherlands, so we spoke Dutch to the Afrikaners, and they spoke Afrikaans back.

In those days of apartheid, Afrikaners were rulers of South Africa and pariahs everywhere else. Today the three million Afrikaners are mostly forgotten. In 1994 they handed power to Nelson Mandela and instantly became irrelevant. Fred de Vries, a Dutch writer living in Johannesburg, wondered what had become of them. His answer - a wonderful book of deep reportage - is about to appear as Afrikaners in Dutch, and Rigtingbedonnerd ("Directionless", roughly) in Afrikaans.

Under apartheid, there was only one accepted way to be an Afrikaner. You belonged to the Dutch Reformed church, you liked rugby, and you voted for apartheid. Renegades were treated as traitors to the tribe. Suddenly, in 1994, everything dissolved. "The once so united Afrikaner people are like a box of night moths after the lid is lifted," writes de Vries. "They blink their eyes against the bright sun, and flit confusedly in different directions."

Many of the moths flitted away from South Africa. Crime had reached Afrikaner suburbs and farms ("Shoot the Boer!" sang the populist politician Julius Malema), government jobs were going to blacks, affirmative action was ousting whites from the private sector, and many Afrikaners simply felt irrelevant in the new nation.

So they made another Great Trek.

Some Afrikaner farmers resettled in Mozambique, or even Ukraine.

In Perth in Australia, de Vries found whole extended families of Afrikaners, served by Dutch Reformed churches preaching in Afrikaans. "I cried so much that the sea-level must have risen," one exiled woman told him. But Afrikaners adapt well.

It was largely the better-educated who emigrated. Meanwhile, many Afrikaners who stayed in South Africa have sunk into an African poverty. Perhaps a fifth of them now have family incomes below EU300 a month. De Vries found Afrikaners begging at traffic lights, and living as vagabonds in squatter camps. (In true South African tradition, white and black squatter camps are largely segregated.) These are the arm wittes, the "poor whites", the problem apartheid was meant to solve. When the Afrikaners took over government in 1948, the aim was to raise the weaker members of the tribe above their black neighbours. Struggling Afrikaners were given government jobs as postmen or receptionists. They earned enough for a small house and a black maid. Now many of these people have plummeted from first to third world.

However, most Afrikaners still in South Africa are flourishing. Excellent schooling for whites during apartheid set them up nicely. Many Afrikaners run businesses, and get on well with government. They have largely abandoned their villages for suburbs, and have built high fences, but otherwise the end of apartheid hasn't overly inconvenienced them. "Economically, most Afrikaners are better off than before 1994," writes de Vries.

What he doesn't seem to have found is many Afrikaners merging into South Africa's "Rainbow Nation". Few young members of the tribe have shacked up with other colours. Afrikaners still remain distinct even from the majority of Afrikaans-speakers who are not white. According to de Vries, few Afrikaners believe in the "Rainbow Nation". But South Africa's rulers probably barely care what these marginal people believe. "I'm just a tourist / In my country of birth," sing the alternative Afrikaner band Fokofpolisiekar.

Even thriving Afrikaners feel an overwhelming sense of loss, writes de Vries. "The Afrikaner rural idyll with its village square and little church" has gone forever. Although the feared apocalypse by vengeful blacks never came, the tribe's institutions are dissolving. The National Party is gone.

The Dutch Reformed church is giving way to American-style evangelical churches.

Many Afrikaners are struggling to find a new identity untarnished by apartheid.

Most fundamentally, their language is probably dying. Scarcely used in administration, Afrikaans just isn't much use anymore. Even at Stellenbosch University, the Afrikaner Oxford, only about 10 per cent of lectures are now in Afrikaans. Writers are an esteemed Afrikaner caste, yet Afrikaans authors (including the half-Afrikaner J.M. Coetzee) increasingly publish in English.

"That's where the debate is," explains writer Antjie Krog. Afrikaans, which became an official language distinct from Dutch only in 1925, may not survive another 87 years. Afrikaners can flourish as individuals in South Africa, but perhaps not as a tribe. They may eventually dissolve into white English-speaking South Africa, or into the white world.

The half-Afrikaner writer Rian Malan (who inevitably writes in English) prophesies that one day Afrikaners will be remembered as "that mythical race that once lived here". Those families on the bus 30 years ago couldn't have imagined that.

Ann.

(Office ambience)

Mary, do you have a minute?

M:Sure. What is it?

M: Yes. Did someone refuse to shake your hand?

M:Absolutely. There is only one proper handshake and that is a firm handshake.

M:You see, people form opinions about a person from his handshake。

******

M:Hey,陳豪,我刚才往開會里到一位客戶, he gave me a firm handshake。

M: OK。 Extend your hand, make sure the web of your hand makes contact with the web of my hand,

M:Very good. Try once more.

M:OK。 Extend your hand, make sure the web of your hand makes contact with the web of my hand, close your thumb over the back of his hand; give a slight squeeze with your fingers; two quick pumps and let go.

CH: Hm... Mary!

Do you want to understand your work colleagues better? Go to the zoo and observe the monkeys. That's the advice of the Dutchbusiness consultant Patrick van Veen, who has biology on his CV.

He takes groups of business people around Chester Zoo in Britain and teaches them how primitive behaviour is alive and well in theworkplace.

The mainly female audience attending the course nod when Mr van Veen describes how most offices have a set ofdominant males, who slap each other's backs, stamp their feet and draw themselves up tall.

Watching the monkeys grooming one another, Mr van Veen emphasises the importance of this kind of supportive behaviour at work. "We spend a lot of time in chit-chat, drinking coffee with each other," he told BBC reporter Katie Prescott. "That's grooming behaviour, like primates do."

The consultant says managers might neglectto do this sometimes, but it is a vital part of keeping a happy environment in the workplace.

Exploring the similarities in behaviour between man and monkeys might be a new idea for a business, but the theory behind it is well known.

Sonya Hill, a research officer at Chester Zoo, points out that there's only a 1.4% difference in genetic material between humans andchimpanzees.

The course, held in several countries across Europe, has also given Mr van Veen the opportunity to do some observation of his own about the way different cultures react in the corporate world. He says that Germans are very hierarchical, but open-minded about changes inmanagement style. The Dutch, according to the consultant, tend not to like change.

A visit to the zoo can prove inspiring and help people to understand the politics at play in theworkplace. So, next time you want to see who is really King Kong in your office, pay close attention to who is grooming who.

  Quiz 測驗

  1. What are Patrick van Veen's two careers?

  2. Why do women nod when Mr van Veen describes behaviour in the office?

  5. What action is described in the article as one of praise and grooming?

There are worse ways to spend time as a hostage than being locked in the headquarters of one of France’s best-known champagne houses.
Back in the summer of 1993, the boss of Moët & Chandon was trapped in his Epernay offices overnight with only a fridge full of bubbly for company. Meanwhile, workers barricaded themselves in the cellars and cracked open a few of the 95m bottles laid down in the dusty warren of tunnels to protest against the group’s plan to commemorate its 250th anniversary with 250 job cuts.
Bossnapping is nothing new in France, almost as much a part of the culture as baguettes and brie. But in recent months, the economic crisis and rising tide of factory closures and restructurings have prompted an unusually high rate of corporate hold-ups. At least 10 companies over the past two months have had managers held hostage, while many more have had factories occupied.
Though most have been peaceful, and no hostage has come to serious harm, few experiences have been as amiable as that champagne-fuelled evening at Epernay. Two managers at the French factory of Molex, the US connectors group, were jostled and bruised as they walked away from their 26-hour ordeal last month (and another Molex manager received death threats in the post). Only last week, 74 energy workers were arrested after extensive damage was done to the Paris offices of power services groups ErDF and GrDF during a protest over pay.

In a small village, there lived a potter1). He had a donkey. Everyday his donkey would carry soil from the field to his house. Since the field was quite far off, the potter would rest under a tree midway, tying his donkey nearby.

One day, the potter forgot to take the rope with which he tied the donkey everyday. When he reached the tree, he thought, “How do I tie this donkey today? He might run away if I sleep.” The potter decided to lie down holding the donkey’s ears so that the donkey would not run away.

But this way neither the donkey nor the potter was able to take a rest. A saint, who happened to be passing by, saw the potter holding on to the donkey’s ears. Then the saint wanted to know what the problem of the potter was. When the potter told the saint what the problem was, the wise saint said, “Take the donkey to the place where you tie him everyday. Pretend to tie him using an imaginary rope. I assure you he won’t run away.” The potter did what the saint had said.

He left the donkey and went to take a nap. When he woke up, to his surprise and relief, he found the donkey standing in the same place.

Soon the potter prepared to leave for home. But the donkey did not move. “What is wrong with this donkey!” exclaimed2) the potter in frustration3).

Luckily, the potter saw the wise saint again. He ran up to the saint and told him about the donkey’s strange behavior. The saint said, “You tied up the donkey, but did you untie him? Go and pretend to untie the rope with which you had tied the donkey.”

The potter followed the saint’s advice. Now the donkey was ready to leave for home. The potter understood that donkey was a bonded donkey. The potter thanked the wise saint and went home happily with his donkey.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what's next and the joy of the game of living.
In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.
When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you've grown old, even at 20;
but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there's hope you may die young at 80.

Never give up until the end of the road

The Augean Stable(s)

The Augean Stable(s)

The Augean Stable(s)

因而,the Augean stable=very dirty place.

它常比to clean,to cleanse,to reform等動詞連用,表现to bring about a drastic reform in some public evil的意义

eg:how to clean the Augean stables of this city remains a critical problem.

Although they know it is not easy to reform the Augean stables of this sociey, they are still trying to do it.

1. I'm so fed up with your BS. Cut the crap.

"Cut your crap."

2. Hey! wise up!

噹別人作了什麼笨拙的事時, 你可以說, "Don't be stupid" 或是 "Don't be silly." Wise up, please.

3. Put up or shut up.

Put up or shut up. Put up or shut up.

有時為了要减強 shut up 的語氣, 老美會把它說成, shut the f**k up. The house on the haunted hill

這句話也讓我想到一句成語, walk the walk, talk the talk, 也就是說到就要作到,有點像是中文裏知止要合一的意思, 或是只說, walk the talk 也可以.

4. You eat with that mouth?

還有一種說法, "You kiss your Momma with that mouth?"

5. You are dead meat.

或是像這樣說 "You are dead meat."

6. Don't you dare!
 How dare you!

或是 "I double dare you."

7. Don't push me around.

Don't push me around. 凡是噹我講 "Don't push me around." You are so bossy. I don't like that."

或是 "Don't push me any further." 例如, "I know why you are doing this, someone is pushing your button!"

8. Are you raised in the barn?

No backyard language in my house."

9. You want to step outside?
You want to take this outside?

還有一些我聽過類似的用法, 例如, "Do you want to pick a fight?" 或是 "This means war."

10. You and what army?
  You and who else?

要是有人跟你說 "Do you want to step outside?", 就回他這一句吧.

還有一句話也很好玩, 叫 "Who's side are you on?"

Out of whack

成心思的是,whack(重擊)跟wacky(瘋瘋癲癲的)不僅長得像,并且還有必定血緣關係。

You're acting out of whack!(您的止為实不畸形!)

Local leaders will lead the group on a whistle-stop tour of the city over the weekend.(周终,噹地領導將帶領該小組游覽本市的一些景點。)

Tencent is China's largest privately owned enterprise oriented toward prehensive Internet business. Founded 12 years ago, it is a testament to the miraculous development of China's Internet industry. Today, all friends connected with the industry gather together here, giving me a precious opportunity to share with you some of our thoughts on the development and prospects of cloud puting in China, our technological focuses, and the influence of cloud puting on the Internet industry and the entire IT industry.

As China's largest Internet pany, Tencent offers high-quality network services to 400 million users across the country. We boast all kinds of Internet businesses, including instant-munication tools, online media, online games, SNS societies, search engines and e-business. Such a wide service range is rare both in China and in the other parts of the world. The advanced cloud puting technology has made it possible for Internet users to enjoy good services more conveniently and opened a spacious room for the development of the Internet industry in the following years.

It only took cloud puting a few years to change from a vague idea to real technology. Chinese Internet panies, including Tencent, caught the trend fortunately. Different panies may have a different understanding on this technology. For Tencent, the key value of cloud puting is that it can utilize the public network structure to make our puting ability, processing ability and logic ponents as assessable as household tap water and electricity. With the aid of cloud puting, we can help users to acquire any anytime, anywhere. This is an unprecedented convenience as pared with the PC era and the initial periods of the Internet era. This is our understanding of cloud puting platform.

In recent years, the Chinese government and Chinese enterprises have invested large quantities of funds, devices and personnel to develop cloud puting technologies. For instance, Tencent is building Asia's largest data center to support a cloud platform and developing a cloud puting platform to support distributed storage, parallel puting and intelligent resource management. Other Chinese enterprises are also working on cloud puting hardware and related support. At the same time, the government is working with the industry to set up relative national standards.

Now, I would like to talk about the major technologies and challenges Tencent is focusing on. Since you are all familiar with super data centers, high-speed broadband network and the cloud puting platform that can manage these hardware devices and systems, I will show you three other key technologies and challenges.

First, security. Let's make a parison. If personal puters and pany puters are like one's safe, and if is money, the practice of storing in a puter is like putting money in his safe, which is, of course, inconvenient and not good for liquidity. Instead, depositing money in a bank is more convenient and safer, on the condition that the bank is secure and credible. In this sense, the key to popularizing cloud puting technology and gaining users' recognition is how safe the Internet is. In terms of technology, efforts should be made to ensure that users can conveniently use services in the cloud and that the services are safe and that users' privacy is protected. We all know that in the online world, it's difficult to realize convenience and safety at the same time. How to address the issue bees the key to popularizing cloud puting. In the past decade, Tencent has made continuous efforts to develop technologies on security,翻译资讯. A professional team is working 24 hours a day to protect user with the best devices and solutions. Generally speaking, we are now able to offer users easy access to our online products and services anytime, anywhere and ensure their is safe. In this situation, users are willing to use our cloud services and move data from their own terminals to our cloud-based "data bank." With regard to laws and policies, efforts should be made to prohibit acts that may harm the safety of user , thus to foster an environment conducive to the development of cloud puting and the entire industry.

The second thing I want to talk about is the platform, which should be universal, standardized and open to all. An advantage of cloud puting is the consistent experience it offers users on all terminals and systems. Currently, the scope of "personal puter" has expanded from traditional PC and Mac puters to smart terminals like cell phones, flat-panel puters, Internet TV and car infotainment systems. And puter operating systems have seen a rigorous development, with Android, iOS, Meego and other new systems emerging in addition to Windows. To support all these terminals and systems, cloud puting must be standardized and universal. Now, the government is working with Internet enterprises, including Tencent, to set up unified standards. An objective of cloud puting is to make puting resources accessible to the whole society in the most economic way. Given the large scale of the work, it's impossible and unnecessary for every enterprise and institution to develop its own cloud puting platform. This work can be done by major Internet panies. To achieve the objective, Tencent insists that the cloud puting platform be universal, standardized and open to all. The openness and cooperativeness of the platform is key to its popularity and its influence on IT Industry and national economy. Platform suppliers should ensure their puting abilities, mass data storage and bandwidths can be as available as water and electricity for small- and medium-sized enterprises and research institutions. If suppliers take cloud puting as a monopolized resource, use it to control enterprises in the midstream and downstream industry and make special rules to force the enterprises to use these services, the entire IT industry will be ruined in the long run. In the principle of openness, cooperation and mutual benefit, Tencent hopes to work with other Internet panies to promote technological development and industry development based on cloud puting. We hope to help Internet users share and services on cloud platform, help small- and medium-sized enterprises and research institutions share cloud puting results and make our contributions to the development of value-added, cloud-based products and services.

The third thing I want to talk about is the key role of cloud applications and services. Cloud puting is only a bearer. Services and applications based on it are the most important. Without the services and applications, cloud puting is useless. Therefore, Tencent will integrate all IT services, including instant munication tools, online media, office automation, online games, SNS societies, search engines and e-business, on the basis of cloud puting. Only in this way can we bring real benefits to users. Next, I will take the QQ cloud as an example to show you our strategy on cloud application. After my explanation, you will see the values cloud puting can bring to users, and you will see the influence cloud puting can leave on the Internet and IT industries. The objective of the QQ cloud is to build an application platform where users can safely bring their service portfolio, online habits and private data to any other scenes. To achieve this, we will first offer users consistent trans-terminal, trans-system services. Currently, there are a variety of terminals and systems, such as the PC, smart phone and flat-panel puter, but they all use the Web as the application platform. Based on the Web, the QQ cloud tries to build a plete cloud-application system to ensure that users can enjoy consistent cloud services. The QQ cloud offers a browser-server, plug-and-play cloud platform, saving users from troubles caused by various terminals. Meanwhile, it allows users to safely bring their cloud service portfolio, user habits and private data to any other application scene. Based on the cloud platform, the QQ cloud can provide users with customized services and social services based on users' contact chain. Users' demands and habits differ. In the past, such was stored on their own terminals, unable to be taken to other places. Now, based on the cloud platform, we can help users choose different service portfolios according to the time and the scene and safely synchronize the portfolios between various terminals or public devices. Users can use the portfolios, including UI, application settings and message receiving and processing mode, in a familiar environment in their accustomed way. Meanwhile, users can share their cloud applications, experiences and creations with friends in their societies. We always stress that cloud puting development needs the efforts of the entire IT industry and the whole society. We advocate an open, market-oriented business environment. The QQ cloud is an open platform. It's impossible to have any single pany develop all applications and services. To build a healthy, win-win industrial environment, the QQ cloud platform is open and transparent to all third-party developers and mercial partners. We hope that in addition to Tencent, our partners, petitors, independent developers and even individual users can create their cloud applications and share or sell them in application market. The QQ cloud will provide application suppliers with basic services, such as terminal patibility, customized settings, cloud storage, contact chain spreading, application management and payment system. With abundant applications, convenient management and safe usage, the QQ cloud is able to meet users' customized demands and better achieve user values. At the same time, it will give application suppliers access to users and contact chains, to better integrate upstream industry with downstream industry and make a joint exploration of new market potentials.

By developing the aforementioned technologies, by solving the three challenges I just talked about, Tencent hopes to bring more benefits to users with the support of cloud platform. In the principle of openness and cooperation, we hope to find more business opportunities for the IT industry.

Four sessions of the China-U.S. Internet Forum has been successfully held. This forum has bee a major munication and cooperation mechanism for the Internet industry of the two countries. Tencent is working hard to explore overseas markets to offer products and services to network users in the U.S. and other countries. We sincerely hope to take the advantage of this forum to enhance our munications with Internet panies in the two countries, discuss new trends, new technologies and new ideas of the industry and make our contribution to the development of the Internet in both China and the U.S., as well as other countries of the world!

Thank you!

President Bush and President Sarkozy of France Exchange Toasts -

November 6, 20

PRESIDENT BUSH: Mr. President, distinguished guests: Laura and I offer you a warm wele to the White House -- or should I say: Bienvenue a la Maison Blanche. (Applause.)

In 1777, another George W. weled to America another Frenchman. His name was Lafayette. The two leaders built a strong friendship, based on mon values and mon virtues. They both recognized the power of human freedom. They both served with courage in freedom's cause. And they both anticipated that freedom would advance in other lands following its victory here in America.

Two centuries later, our two nations are honoring their legacy of Lafayette by helping others resist tyranny and terror. French and American troops are helping to defend a young democracy in Afghanistan. Our two nations support the democratic government of Lebanon. We agree that reconciliation and democracy in Iraq are vital to the future of the Middle East. And our two nations condemn violations of human rights in Darfur, in Burma and around the world.

France and the United States can meet great challenges when we work together, Mr. President. You and I share a mitment to deepen the cooperation of our two republics -- and through this cooperation, we can make the world a better place.

I look forward to our discussions at Mount Vernon, where George Washington weled his friend, Lafayette. And in the spirit of their friendship, I offer a toast to you -- and to some of America's oldest friends, the free people of France.

(A toast is offered.)

PRESIDENT SARKOZY: (As translated) Mr. President, Mrs. Laura Bush, ladies and gentlemen, it is indeed an honor to be weled here, with such pomp, but also with such warmth -- a warmth that is so istic of you both, that makes this place, this house, a place where each and every French man and woman feels indeed truly weled.

One feels weled and good in this place, but I'm equally aware of the fact, as you, George, have reminded us on several occasions, that in the White House one is only passing through. And that applies to both of us who have been elected as we have by democratic universal suffrage.

You know, I've e to Washington to bear a very simple, straightforward message, and I bear it on behalf of all French men and women: I wish to reconquer the heart of America, and I wish to reconquer the heart of America in a lasting fashion. I've e to say one simple thing: France and the United States are allies, have been allies, and will continue to be allies, and have been so forever.

Our two peoples throughout our history have been through some of the worst trials and tribulations one can imagine. From Yorktown to Omaha Beach and, lastly, in Afghanistan, our mon destiny is that of two peoples who believe in freedom, who want freedom, and who are prepared to struggle for freedom together. Yes, George, when we have stood together, the French people and the American people together, we have undertaken and won some of the toughest battles one can imagine.

Earlier on, I wished, and I did, decorate some of the great heroes, the American veterans who fought in the second world war, those heroes of the Greatest Generation. And I wanted to tell them that we in France will never forget what they did for us, ever. What I wanted to say is this: I wanted the American people to know that these simple people, these simple heroes were men, young men, who came to die upon our shores for something that they believed in, and that never will any French man or woman forget that. In my country there are thousands upon thousands of white crosses to remember those men who didn't know France, and yet who came to die on French soil. And I want to tell you that whenever a U.S. soldier dies anywhere in the world, I think of what the Americans and -- the American army and Americans have done for us.

Our peoples resemble one another, and they admire each other. And that is precisely why they have this strong bond, an impassioned relation which is not simple, but it is always beautiful. And I also came to say that one can be a friend of America, and yet win elections in France. (Laughter and applause.)

We have many other, many other challenges to face. I think in particular of terrorism. On 9/11 terrorists thought that they had brought, or they could bring America to its knees. And I will tell you that, seen from the French perspective, never has America seemed so great, so proud, so admirable as on 9/11. And on 9/11, we, all of us, were proud of America and the Americans.

We need to take up a challenge of nuclear proliferation, of religious extremism and of fanaticism. And we need to respond to the demands and challenges of peoples who wish to claim their rightful place in a new world, the world of the 21st century -- and a new order, that of the 21st century, which is no longer the order of the 20th century. And we need also, together, to find a new balance between man and nature, in order that we may save this planet of ours -- and not only save it, but leave it as a legacy to our children in a better state than that in which we found it. Together we must vanquish abject poverty, because it is on abject poverty that terrorism worldwide feeds.

So here I am in Washington on a first Tuesday in November. (Laughter.) Now, I have no electoral ambitions when it es to the U.S. -- (laughter) -- even though I know it's a very special day because it's the day on which Americans elect their President. So allow me to the memory and pay tribute to the long line of American Presidents who have always put forward, who have always given priority to the friendship between our two countries.

George talked about Lafayette and he talked about George Washington. Bear with me as I recount this anecdote. To President John Quincy Adams, who was weling Lafayette in these self-same walls, in this self-same house, on the occasion of his 66th birthday, and broke with the customs, the protocol of the time, suggested to the general -- to the French general that they drink a toast, as he said, to the 22nd of February and to the 6th of September, which were the birthdays of Washington and of Lafayette, himself.

On the onset of that, Lafayette responded, "No, let there be no toast to my birthday, or even to that of George Washington. Let us raise our glasses and toast the 4th of July, which is the day that liberty was born." And you know, for all of us, liberty is exemplified and symbolized by America. For those of my generation, America was not the country that promised liberty and freedom; it is the country that gave liberty and freedom.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would invite you, therefore, to raise your glasses, and let us drink to the health of President George Bush, and if you would allow me, madam, to you, Mrs. Laura Bush, and to the alliance between our two peoples. And I say the following words from the bottom of my heart: Long live Franco-American friendship. Long live the United States. Long live France.

(A toast is offered.) (Applause.)

  Opportunity and Success

Some deem that opportunity is the key to success. For example, those global business giants like Google owe their success to the huge opportunities they meet. Google's boom benefits from the of Internet. Another striking example is Zhang Liangying's overnight sensation. Super Girl Voice Contest, a golden opportunity for her, put the spotlight on her.

Others argue that intelligence and diligence outweigh opportunity. There is solely a Google around the planet. The Internet superpower gains from its co-founders' advanced technology and keen insight into the global internet market. Zhang Liangying demonstrated her distinguished talent and the very wide vocal range. For this reason, she left an favorable impression with judges and won a host of diehard fans.

In my eyes, success is strongly linked with both. The bination of these two factors breeds success. There are enormous opportunities beckoning us,. We must seize them and exert our all-out intelligence and ability.

I Am Chinese

Our problems are big, but our ambition is even bigger, our challenges are great, but our will is even greater,等等。

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,

I am Chinese. I am proud of being a Chinese with five thousand years of civilization behind. I've learned about the four great inventions made by our forefathers. I've learned about the Great Wall and the Yangtze River. I've learned about Zhang Heng(張衡)and I've learned about Zheng He(鄭跟).Who says the Yellow River Civilization has vanished(消散)?I know that my ancestors have made miracles(偶跡)on this fertile land and we're still making miracles. Who can ignore the fact that we have established ourselves as a great state in the world, that we have devised our own nuclear weapons, that we have successfully sent our satellites into space, and that our GNP ranks No. 7 in the world? We have experienced the plunders (掠奪) by other nations, and we have experienced the war. Yet, based on such ruins, there still stands our nation----China, unyielding and unconquerable!

I once came across an American tourist. She said, “China has a history of five thousand years, but the US only has a history of 200 years. Five thousand years ago, China took the lead in the world, and now it is the US that is leading.”My heart was deeply touched by these words. It is true that we're still a developing nation, but it doesn't mean that we can despise (鄙視) ourselves. We have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. We have reasons to say proudly: we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition (大志) is even bigger, our challenges (挑戰) are great, but our will is even greater.

I am Chinese. I have inherited (繼承) black hair and black eyes. I have inherited the virtues of my ancestors. I have also taken over responsibility. I am sure, that wherever I go, whatever I do, I shall never forget that I am Chinese!

Thank you.

好國俚語 (the)Finest,Bravest…

“the New York's Finest”或“the Finest”可不是說“最好的紐約人”,而是氾指“紐約警员”。

Sermon to the Birds -

Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) was born into a wealthy family at Assisi, Italy, the son of a cloth merchant. Francis received little formal education and during his youth was mostly preoccupied with having fun. As a young man, he was popular, charming, enjoyed practical jokes and was usually the life of the party.

Because of his wealth, he generally picked up the tab and thus attracted a following of fun loving, rowdy young men and promiscuous women.

When armed conflict broke out between the men of Assisi and a neighboring city in 1202, Francis eagerly volunteered for the cavalry but wound up getting captured after the first big battle and spent a year in captivity.

Francis returned to Assisi hailed as a hero, but unknown to his friends he had undergone a transformation in his outlook during his captivity. Although he was once again the life of the party, he was now questioning his reason for existence.

After much contemplation, including vivid dreams and mystic visions, he turned away from the pursuit of all worldly pleasures, sold all his property and donated the money to the Church. He then began a lifelong passion of caring for society's castoffs, the sick and poor,翻譯, including lepers.

His wealthy father reacted to his son's new lifestyle by disinheriting him. Thus Francis lived in utter poverty and even went without shoes. But his humbleness, extraordinary kindness and love for humanity attracted the attention of other young men and they also chose to give up worldly pleasures and follow him to spread the gospel and serve the poor.

Eventually, as the brotherhood grew, its members traveled to other parts of Europe to preach, including France, Germany, Spain and England. A separate order for women was formed, now known as the Franciscan Nuns or Poor Clares.

Francis had much love for animals with special fondness for the birds. He liked to refer to animals as his brothers and sisters. Legend has it that wild animals had no fear of Francis and even came to him seeking refuge from harm.

In 1224, Francis went up onto a mountain and began a 40-day fast. During that time he is said to have had a miraculous vision and received the marks of the nails and spear exactly as they appeared on the body of Jesus during his crucifixion.

After his death in 1226, Francis was declared a saint by Pope Gregory IX. For several centuries now, his Franciscan order has experienced continuous growth and is still active today caring for the poor, educating youth, and performing many other good deeds.

My little sisters, the birds, much bounden are ye unto God, your Creator, and always in every place ought ye to praise Him, for that He hath given you liberty to fly about everywhere, and hath also given you double and triple rainment; moreover He preserved your seed in the ark of Noah, that your race might not perish out of the world; still more are ye beholden to Him for the element of the air which He hath appointed for you; beyond all this, ye sow not, neither do you reap; and God feedeth you, and giveth you the streams and fountains for your drink; the mountains and valleys for your refuge and the high trees whereon to make your nests; and because ye know not how to spin or sow, God clotheth you, you and your children; wherefore your Creator loveth you much, seeing that He hath bestowed on you so many benefits; and therefore, my little sisters, beware of the sin of ingratitude, and study always to give praises unto God.

President Bush Meets with Secretary General of NATO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer -

February 29, 2008

PRESIDENT BUSH: It's my honor to wele the Secretary General of NATO back to the Oval Office. Last time I was with the Secretary General I was trying to keep up with him on my mountain bike. He's a dear friend and a strong leader.

I appreciate the -- your helping to transform NATO so it deals with the pressures of the 21st century. You've done your job with great dignity and clarity of thought. And I'm looking forward to ing to Bucharest to support your efforts to make sure NATO is a relevant organization aimed at bringing security and peace to the world.

We've had a lot of things to discuss. A couple of key points: One, Afghanistan. The United States is mitted to the NATO mission in Afghanistan. We're mitted to a prehensive strategy that helps folks in Afghanistan realize security, at the same time, economic prosperity and political progress. Secondly, our hope is that nations that have applied to join NATO continue to meet their MAP obligations. I'm looking forward to getting an assessment of the progress that these three nations have made from you, before we take the vote on enlargement,中譯日.

I appreciate very much NATO's role in helping to provide some sense of stability in the Balkans. Thank you for doing a training mission in Iraq. Over all, thanks for being a force for good. And I'm proud to wele you back here.

SECRETARY GENERAL DE HOOP SCHEFFER: Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you, George.

Four working weeks until the Bucharest summit of NATO. I can echo the President's words, first of all, NATO's operations and missions. We have a long-term mitment vis-a-vis Afghanistan. I thank the President for the United States' contribution in the NATO framework, which is an essential one. All 26 NATO allies are there and we are there for the long haul. We are there to support President Karzai and the Afghan people. But we're also there because we're fighting terrorism, and we cannot afford to lose. We will not lose; we are not losing; we are prevailing.

May I mention Kosovo, which will be discussed. The secondary important NATO presence, 60,000 strong, to protect all Kosovars, majority, minority, Albanian or Serb, so that also Kosovo will have a future.

NATO enlargement, the President mentioned. The nations concerned should go on with their reforms. No tickets are punched yet, but NATO enlargement will be on the agenda of the Bucharest summit. And certainly also what I call NATO finding the answers to modern threats and challenges, be it energy security and NATO's role as a bringer of added value. Cyber defense; we saw a huge cyber attack on Estonia not that long ago. Missile defense is certainly an issue.

So we have a real full calendar in Bucharest, and that is basically the calendar the President and I discussed. And I'm always very much enjoying the hospitality not only in the Oval, but at the Crawford ranch, as well.

I thank you very much.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you all.
